
Students had to put their mealworm larva through a series of tests to see how they would respond. They recorded their observations and created a hypothesis about how the mealworm beetle would respond to the same tests. Students also needed to include other questions they thought of while performing the lab and create an experiment to find the answer to one question.

Intro To The Compound Microscope

For this lab students used a compound microscope to look at water from a pond and one specimen from outside on the school grounds. Students were responsible for learning the rules of using the microscope, the parts of a compound microscope and how to make a wet mount slide. This picture is where I found the water. Needless to say, the student found a lot swimming in their water sample

Cell Extra Credit

Cheek Cell Lab

In this lab students had to look at some of their cheek cells under the microscope. This required students to learn how to stain a slide.

Amylase Lab

This might be one the lab the kids never forget. Here they had to suck on a saltine cracker and spit every two minutes. They would test their saliva for starch with Iodine. The students were learning about enzymes and different forms of carbohydrates.

Energy Pyramid

Energy Pyramid Grading Rubric

The students will be using Microsoft Word to create an Energy Pyramid from the Blue Sea video watched in class. Students must choose one of the food webs discussed in class and find appropriate pictures from the internet. The grading rubric consists of the following:
· 5 points – Proper heading with Word Table
· 5 points – Pictures used for each level of the pyramid and for the name of the ecosystem
· 5 points – “Autotroph” and “Heterotroph” properly labeled for each organism along with their name in a Text Box
· 5 points – Use an arrow from the AutoShapes to show which way the energy flows through the ecosystem

Fermentation Lab

During chapter 4 we learned about respiration, photosynthesis and fermentation. To show what type of environment is necessary to create fermentation we used this lab where we turn cabbage into sauerkraut or kimchee.

Mitosis Picture

Here the the students had to draw a diagram for the stages of mitosis. Students were expected to draw pictures of each stage and describe what is happening.
